How the gold market works in Malaysia
Malaysia's retail market quotes two purities: 999 (24K) for investment bars and wafers, and 916 (22K) for most jewellery. Public Gold, the country's largest retail bullion issuer, publishes the bar prices that local shops commonly use as a reference.
Jewellery from a kedai emas is priced as the gold value plus a workmanship charge (upah), which varies with the design. Banks also offer gold investment accounts that track the price without physical delivery.
Prices are quoted per gram in ringgit, so they move with both world spot and the ringgit-dollar rate. Demand peaks around Hari Raya, Chinese New Year and Deepavali.
