How the gold market works in Thailand
Thailand has one of the most transparent retail gold markets in the world. The Gold Traders Association (GTA) publishes the official buy and sell prices for 96.5% gold several times a day, and shops across the country post the same board. Prices move in steps of 50 baht.
Thai gold is weighed in baht-weight, not grams: one baht of gold bar is 15.244 g, while one baht of ornament gold is 15.16 g. Almost everything sold is 96.5% purity (about 23K), and jewellery adds a fixed workmanship fee (kha gamnet) per piece rather than a percentage.
Bangkok's Yaowarat Road in Chinatown is the traditional centre of the trade. Because the GTA price is set from world spot and the dollar-baht rate, Thai prices track the global market closely, with a small, stable domestic margin.
