How the gold market works in India
India is one of the world's two largest consumers of gold, and most of it is bought as 22K jewellery for weddings and festivals rather than as bars. Retail prices across the country follow the India Bullion & Jewellers Association (IBJA) fix, published every trading day in the morning and afternoon. Differences between cities are small; what changes from shop to shop is the making charge, which can range from about 5% on plain chains to over 20% on intricate bridal work.
Because India imports nearly all its gold, the domestic price sits above world spot by the import duty plus GST. The duty is a policy lever the government adjusts — it was cut to 6% in the July 2024 budget — so the premium over spot can move overnight.
Demand peaks around Akshaya Tritiya, Dhanteras and Diwali, and the winter wedding season. Since 2021 most jewellery must carry a BIS hallmark with a 6-digit HUID code; check it before you pay.
