How the gold market works in Singapore
Singapore has positioned itself as a regional bullion hub since it exempted investment-grade gold, silver and platinum from GST in October 2012. That makes bars and coins of 99.5% purity or higher cheaper to buy here than in most of Asia.
UOB, one of the few banks still dealing physical bullion over the counter, publishes daily retail buy and sell prices for gold bars, which serve as the local reference. Private dealers compete on the premium over spot.
Jewellery is different: it is not investment-grade, so it carries GST, plus a workmanship charge. The traditional jewellery shops in Chinatown sell mostly 916 (22K) and 999 (24K) gold. Prices are quoted in Singapore dollars per gram.
