How the gold market works in Hong Kong

Hong Kong's gold trade has run through the Chinese Gold & Silver Exchange Society (CGSE) since 1910. Its daily quotes for 99 tael gold and kilobars are the reference every Hong Kong jeweller prices against, from Chow Tai Fook and Chow Sang Sang to independent shops in Sheung Wan.

Prices are quoted per tael, and the Hong Kong tael (37.429 g) is not the same as the mainland Chinese liang (50 g), so always check which one a quote uses. Retail gold is labelled by fineness: 足金 (at least 99.0%) and 千足金 (99.9%).

Hong Kong charges no VAT or sales tax on gold, and the Hong Kong dollar is pegged to the US dollar in a 7.75–7.85 band, so local prices track world spot almost one-for-one. Demand from mainland visitors is a large swing factor for retail prices and premiums.
