How the gold market works in Pakistan

Pakistan prices gold per tola (11.66 g) and per 10 grams, and the reference rate is set daily by the sarafa (bullion) associations in Karachi and other cities. Most demand is 22K and 24K, much of it for wedding jewellery.

The rupee's long slide against the dollar means Pakistani gold prices have climbed much faster than world spot, and gold is a common hedge against inflation. Local rates can also stray from the import-parity price when supply is tight.

The figures on this page are derived from world spot and the rupee exchange rate, so treat them as an indication; your local sarafa rate and your jeweller's making charge, often 8–22%, decide what you actually pay.
