How the gold market works in Turkey
In Turkey gold is everyday savings, not a luxury. Years of lira depreciation have made households hold gold as a store of value, and the price that matters is the Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) market in Istanbul, quoted live per gram of 24K gold (gram altın).
Turks buy gold by product as much as by weight: the quarter coin (çeyrek altın, about 1.75 g of 22K gold), half (yarım), full (tam) and Republic coins (Cumhuriyet altını) are standard gifts at weddings and births, and 22K bangles (bilezik) are the classic form of jewellery savings.
Because the lira moves daily, the gram price in lira can rise even when world gold falls. The difference between buy and sell prices is wider on coins than on gram gold, so for pure saving gram gold or bars are usually cheaper to get in and out of.
