Gold-Silver Ratio Strategy

Some investors use the gold-silver ratio to time trades between the two metals:

The strategy: When the ratio is high (>80), silver is cheap relative to gold — swap gold for silver. When the ratio drops (<50), silver is expensive — swap back to gold. This "ratio trading" has historically outperformed holding either metal alone.

Silver vs. Gold

Silver is sometimes called "gold on steroids" — it amplifies gold's moves, both up and down. In the 2008–2011 bull market, gold rose ~175% while silver rose ~400%. But in the subsequent bear market, silver fell twice as far.
