FAQ

The Vault — FAQ

What is The Vault?

The Vault is a free personal ledger for your precious-metals holdings — gold, silver, platinum, palladium. You record each purchase (quantity, price, date, dealer), and we value it against the live prices you already watch on thegoldprice.net. No trading, no brokerage, no fees — it's a record-keeping tool, not a marketplace.

Is it really free?

Yes. No trial, no "freemium tier", no ads inside the Vault. We're funded by the rest of the site (price data, guides, affiliate links to dealers). Your ledger stays free regardless.

Is my data private?

Yes. Your vault is tied to your account and only visible to you. We don't sell or share it, and we don't run third-party analytics inside the Vault pages. Family sharing is opt-in, per-person — nobody sees your ledger unless you explicitly invite them.

What metals and weight units are supported?

All four precious metals: gold, silver, platinum, palladium. For weight, you can record and display entries in ounces, grams, kilograms, or any of the regional units commonly used for household gold: lượng (Vietnam), tola (India / Pakistan / UAE), baht (Thailand), tael (Hong Kong / China), don (Korea). Pick your preferred unit in Settings — the Vault converts automatically.

What currencies can I use?

USD, EUR, GBP, CHF, JPY, INR, AED, VND, CNY, THB, AUD, CAD, SGD, KRW, HKD, EGP. Pick one in Settings — all totals, cost basis, and P&L are shown in that currency, with historical exchange rates captured at the moment of each purchase so your cost basis doesn't drift as FX moves.

How is "today's value" calculated?

By default, we use international spot price × your weight × today's exchange rate to your preferred currency. If you hold Vietnamese SJC or similar domestic gold, you can switch the valuation reference per metal to a specific domestic source (SJC HCM, DOJI, PNJ, etc.), or to a tokenized proxy like PAXG / XAUT. You can also pin a manual price if you want the ledger to reflect a dealer quote you got this morning. See the full guide for the valuation cascade.

What if I sell some of my gold?

Add a sell entry — same form as a buy, just with the "Sell" toggle. It subtracts from your net weight and proceeds are added back to your cost calculation. You'll see per-metal holdings go down accordingly.

Can I import from a spreadsheet?

Yes. Download the CSV or Excel template from /vault/import, fill it in, upload. One metal per file — you pick which metal at upload time, and every row applies to that metal. Full import/export guide here.

Can I export my data?

Yes — any time, from the dashboard. CSV and Excel both supported. You get every entry with full columns (metal, type, quantity, unit, date, price, currency, total, dealer, notes). It's a portable copy: nothing locks you in.

Can I share my vault with family?

Yes — invite a family member by email. They see your holdings read-only (or edit, if you give them that permission). They need their own free account to accept. Shared vaults show up on their dashboard alongside their own.

What if I forget my password?

Click "Forgot?" on the login page. We'll email you a reset link. If you signed up with Google, there's no password — just click "Sign in with Google" again.

Does the Vault track transactions on a blockchain?

No. The Vault is a private record-keeping app, not an on-chain wallet. Your entries are stored securely on our servers. For tokenized gold (PAXG, XAUT) we use its live price as a valuation reference, but we don't touch or custody any on-chain assets.

Can I use it on mobile?

Yes — every page is responsive and works in mobile browsers. A native iOS / Android app for the Vault is on the roadmap but isn't shipped yet.

How do I delete my account?

This one's still manual — send us a note and we'll remove your vault and account within 24 hours. A self-serve delete button is on the roadmap.
