Dubai vs Sharjah vs Abu Dhabi Gold — Where to Actually Buy in 2026
UAE · City Buying Guide 2026
Dubai's Gold Souk Deira hosts 300+ shops and gets all the headlines. But for actual purchase, Sharjah Central Souk often beats Dubai on price by 1–3 percentage points for the same Khaleeji 21K design — and Abu Dhabi's Madinat Zayed sits in the middle. The UAE's daily Gulf News rate is uniform nationwide; where you save money is making charges, rent overhead, and the tax-free advantage on investment bars. This guide breaks down where to actually go in 2026.

The Gulf News daily rate — UAE's price floor
The Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group sets a thrice-daily reference rate for the entire UAE — morning, afternoon, and evening cycles. Gulf News republishes it and every jeweller in Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Ajman, and Ras Al Khaimah quotes from it. So per-gram bullion at 24K is identical in Deira and in Sharjah Central Souk on the same day.
What varies between cities is the making charge — the labour markup added on top — and to a smaller extent the dealer margin on bullion bars. Dubai's tourist density pushes making charges up. Sharjah's lower rents pull them down. Abu Dhabi sits in between with a more local-resident clientele.
Dubai — the iconic Gold Souk Deira
The Deira Gold Souk is the densest concentration of gold retail outside India. ~300 shops along Sikkat Al Khail and Al Ahmadiya Streets, mostly Indian-Muslim and Iranian-owned, trading non-stop from 10 AM to 10 PM, six days a week.
Making charges in Deira run 5–15% for jewellery and 1–3% for investment bars (1g, 5g, 10g, 100g, 1kg). Tourist-targeted shops near the Deira metro entrance push the upper end; the lanes further west (around Al Khor Street) are quieter and price-tighter. Bargaining is expected: assume 10–15% headroom on the first quote.
Beyond Deira, Gold & Diamond Park (Sheikh Zayed Road) and Dubai Mall's "Gold Souk Extension" cater to higher-end and more design-driven retail — Damas, L'azurde, Joyalukkas flagships. These are pricier (15–25% making) but no haggling and more modern designs.
Sharjah — Central Souk (Blue Souk) gold wing
Sharjah's Central Souk — built in 1979, instantly recognisable from its iconic blue-tiled exterior — has an upper floor that's effectively a smaller, calmer Deira. About 70 shops, mostly Indian-owned, with significantly lower overhead than Dubai because of cheaper rent. Same Gulf News rate, but typical making charges are 1–3 percentage points below Dubai for equivalent designs.
Sharjah is where many UAE locals priced out of Dubai's tourist surcharge actually shop. The drive from Bur Dubai to Central Souk is 20 minutes off-peak. For South Asian wedding sets (22K bridal), Sharjah typically delivers a 4–8% total saving on a complete bridal trousseau vs Deira.
Abu Dhabi — Madinat Zayed Gold Centre
Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre houses ~150 gold and jewellery shops, often called "Gold Souk Abu Dhabi". Compared to Deira: about half the size, two-thirds the foot traffic, and lower tourist density. Local Emirati and South Asian expat clientele dominate.
Making charges in Madinat Zayed run 5–12% for jewellery — between Sharjah and Dubai. Bullion bars trade at 1–3% over Gulf News, similar to Deira. For investors who already live in Abu Dhabi, there's no compelling reason to drive to Dubai to buy a 100g bar; the local price is essentially the same.
Head-to-head: same product, three cities
For a 50g 22K South Asian bridal necklace (typical Indian-wedding piece, mid-level filigree), here's the 2026 realistic spread:
| Component | Dubai Deira | Sharjah | Abu Dhabi |
|---|---|---|---|
| 22K bullion (50g) | AED 26,100 | AED 26,100 | AED 26,100 |
| Making charge (typical) | AED 2,610 (10%) | AED 1,827 (7%) | AED 2,088 (8%) |
| 5% VAT | AED 1,436 | AED 1,396 | AED 1,409 |
| Final price | AED 30,146 | AED 29,323 | AED 29,597 |
| Savings vs Dubai | Sharjah −AED 823 · Abu Dhabi −AED 549 | ||
For an investment-grade 100g 24K bar (PAMP, Argor-Heraeus or local refiner), the calculation is much closer — making is just 1–3% everywhere, and the bullion rate is identical. Sharjah might save you AED 50–100 on a 100g bar; not material for an investment-driven purchase.
What to ask for, by purpose
Match the karat to the buyer:
- 24K (999) bars and coins: Pure investment. Zero VAT in UAE (if bullion-grade certificate). The thinnest spread to spot anywhere in the Gulf. Best at any Deira shop with a PAMP/Argor authorised-dealer sticker.
- 22K (916) bridal sets: For South Asian wedding gold. Sharjah is the price leader. Look for the Indian-style "Lakshmi haar" or "chandbali" sets.
- 21K (875) Khaleeji designs: Traditional Gulf-style — heavier, more sculptural, lower karat than South Asian work. Deira and Madinat Zayed both have strong selection.
- 18K (750) modern designs: For diamond-set or contemporary brand jewellery (Cartier, Tiffany, etc., or local boutique). Sheikh Zayed Road malls; not the souks.
VAT refund for non-residents
Tourists (non-UAE residents) can reclaim the 5% VAT paid on jewellery at the airport. The process — managed by Planet Tax Free — requires:
- Purchase from a "Tax Free Tagged" shop (most Deira / Madinat Zayed / Sharjah shops are; ask before paying)
- Spend minimum AED 250 in a single transaction
- Validate the tax-free receipt at the airport Planet desk before check-in
- Refund credited to card within 9 weeks (or cash at desk for smaller amounts, with a small processing fee)
For a AED 30,000 bridal set this is AED 1,400 back — real money. For investment bars (zero VAT to start with) there's nothing to refund.
When to buy — UAE seasonality 2026
Three peaks and one trough each year:
- Ramadan / Eid al-Fitr — March–April 2026. Gold gift-giving spikes; making charges hold but volumes are heavy. Bargain harder.
- DSF (Dubai Shopping Festival) — December 2026–January 2027. Promotional rates and bonus tickets are common at large retailers. Best time for design-grade pieces.
- Indian wedding tourism — November–February. Sharjah and Madinat Zayed see surge from Indian families flying in to buy bridal trousseau.
- Summer trough — July–August. Peak heat. Tourist traffic falls, locals leave the country. Best time for discreet quiet-shopping with maximum bargaining headroom.
