The Vault — A Personal Gold Ledger on thegoldprice.net
Most portfolio trackers are built for traders — red-and-green dashboards, percentages flashing every minute, a constant invitation to panic. The Vault is the opposite. It is a calm, private ledger for people who buy gold, put it away, and come back months later to see how things are going. It is free to use, lives entirely on thegoldprice.net, and has a small, deliberate feature set.
What is The Vault?
A personal ledger for your gold, silver, platinum, and palladium holdings. You record each purchase (or sale) — how much you bought, where, when, how much you paid — and The Vault:
- Adds your weights up and shows what you own, in your preferred unit (ounce, gram, lượng, tola, baht, tael, don, kg)
- Values your holdings in your preferred currency — USD, EUR, GBP, CHF, JPY, INR, AED, VND, CNY, THB, AUD, CAD, SGD, KRW, HKD, EGP
- Charts your collection's value over time, from your first purchase to today
- Lets you swap the "current price" reference between international spot, a domestic gold price (e.g. Vietnam SJC), or a price you enter yourself
- Lets you share view-only or edit access with family members
The dashboard hero: weight first, money as a supporting line, reassuring prose instead of a red percentage.
Who It's For
The Vault is built for the long-term holder — someone who buys physical gold once or twice a year, keeps it in a safe or with a trusted vault service, and wants a quiet record of what they own. If you check gold prices every hour and trade futures, this isn't for you. Try our futures table instead.
A small design decision: weight is always the hero in The Vault. Your dashboard doesn't lead with a dollar figure — it leads with how much metal you have. Money is the supporting line underneath. A short dip in the gold price shouldn't redesign your emotional state.
What You See When You Log In
The dashboard is one page, top to bottom. It reads like a journal, not a trading screen.
- Hero: You hold 26.25 oz (or 816.40 g, or 21.77 lượng — whatever unit you picked). Below, in smaller type: Worth about $24,869.97 today · Up $9,119.97 since you bought · Quietly growing.
- Chart: A soft, gold-tinted area chart of your portfolio value from your first purchase to now. Default view is "All time" — because for a long-term holder that is the interesting view.
- Quietest gainer / Napping cards if you hold more than one metal — a gentle way to see which is doing the best and which is just sitting there.
- Shelves: one per metal, with a small bullion-bar pictogram, the weight, today's value, what you paid, and a
+button to quickly record another purchase of that same metal. - Your purchases: a dated journal — "Bought 1.0 oz of Gold from APMEX — $1,680.00" on 4 Nov 2022, and so on down the list.
- A small note: a footer paragraph reminding you that short-term swings up and down are normal, gold has been a long-term store of value for thousands of years.
Each metal is a shelf. The thin row beneath shows which reference price is used for today's value — click Change to pick a different one.
Recording a Purchase
Click + Add a purchase anywhere on the dashboard. The form is short — six fields, plus two optional ones:
| Field | What it captures |
|---|---|
| Metal | Gold · Silver · Platinum · Palladium |
| Type | Buy or Sell |
| Weight + Unit | Any unit (oz, g, lượng, tola, baht, tael, don, kg) — stored canonically in grams |
| Total Cost + Currency | What you paid, in whatever currency the receipt was in |
| Price per unit (optional) | Defaults to the current market. Change it to capture the exact price you paid — becomes your default "today's price" reference |
| Purchase Date | When the transaction happened — used for historical FX + the chart |
| Dealer (optional) | APMEX, local jeweller, a friend, SJC shop |
| Notes (optional) | "Wedding anniversary", "1oz bar serial #X1234", anything you want to remember |
The entry form. The small Current market line updates live as you switch metal, unit, or currency — so you can sanity-check the price you typed.
The form's Current market hint line updates as you change the metal, unit, or currency. That way if you're about to record a purchase at a wildly off-market price, you'll notice before hitting save.
Valuation That Matches Your Market
This is the feature we are most proud of. A common complaint about portfolio trackers: you bought gold for ₫170,000,000 per lượng at your local SJC shop, and tomorrow the app tells you the holding is "worth ₫151,000,000, down 10%". You didn't lose anything — you paid the domestic VN gold price, which is structurally different from international spot converted to VND. The app was measuring against the wrong yardstick.
The Vault lets you pick the yardstick. For each metal you hold, the valuation uses this priority — highest wins:
- Your own recent input — the price you typed on your latest purchase, or a vault-level "my own price" override. Whichever was most recent. Because you know your local market best.
- A domestic reference — a commodity whose price we already track (Vietnam: SJC HCM, SJC Hà Nội, DOJI, PNJ, Bảo Tín Minh Châu). More regions coming.
- International spot — the default, right for buyers who think in world-market terms.
You switch between these in a small inline form under each metal's shelf — click Change. Pick one radio button, save, done.
Why this matters: A Vietnamese user holding 1 lượng of SJC 9999 at ₫170M should not see the same dashboard as an American buyer holding 1 ounce of spot gold at $2,300. Their markets are different. The Vault respects that.
Changing Your Display Currency
There is a dropdown in the top-right corner of the dashboard — USD, EUR, GBP, CHF, JPY, INR, AED, VND, CNY, THB, AUD, CAD, SGD, KRW, HKD, EGP. Pick one. Everything re-renders in that currency. Your original receipts stay untouched (the journal still shows "₫170,000,000" for that purchase, no matter what your display currency is). Totals and chart values convert live using our published FX rates.
Under the hood each entry snapshots its USD-equivalent at the moment you save it — so day-to-day currency moves don't wobble your historical cost basis up and down for no reason.
Family Sharing
You can invite a family member to your vault with two permission levels:
- View — they can see your dashboard, totals, and journal. They cannot add or change anything.
- Edit — they can add and edit entries. Useful for couples tracking joint savings. Only the owner can delete entries or manage sharing.
Invites are sent by email. If the recipient already has a Vault account, the share activates instantly. If not, they get a signup link — and once they register, the share links up automatically.
Privacy & Separation
The Vault uses a separate account system from anything else on thegoldprice.net. Your vault data is:
- Private by default — only you (and anyone you explicitly invite) can see it
- Never sold — we don't run ads against it or sell data to third parties
- Yours to delete — delete your account and every entry and share vanishes with it
You can sign up with an email and password, or with Google (one click, no password to remember).
