UAE Purity Grades — Why 21K Dominates

One thing that surprises first-time visitors: the UAE market uses four standard purities, not two. 21K is unusually popular here — a Gulf regional preference — and you'll see it dominant in everyday jewellery designed for the Khaleeji aesthetic.

Karat Purity Stamp Typical Use
24K99.9%+999Investment bars, coins, biscuit gold
22K91.67%916South Asian style jewellery

Why Dubai Gold Is (Mostly) Tax-Free

"Tax-free gold" is the marketing line. The reality is more nuanced — here's how the UAE's gold tax structure actually breaks down.

Import duty

0%

No customs duty on raw gold — the policy that turned Dubai into a regional refining hub.

VAT on investment bars & coins

0%

Investment-grade gold (99%+ purity, bar or coin form, meeting DMCC/LBMA standards) is exempt.

VAT on jewellery

5%

Charged on the total, refundable for tourists via Planet Tax Free at airport departure.

Capital gains tax

0%

No CGT anywhere in the UAE. You keep 100% of any price appreciation.

Compare this to India's 15–18% combined import duty and GST, or a 28% US collectibles tax on long-term gold gains, and Dubai's pricing advantage becomes obvious. It's why people fly in specifically to buy.

Dubai Gold Souk vs Online Dealers

Dubai Gold Souk (Deira)

Best for jewellery & the experience.

Bespoke pieces, bargaining, the atmosphere. Making charges can reach 30% on intricate designs — always ask for the per-gram rate and the separate making charge.

Negotiable Physical inspection

Online & DMCC Dealers

Best for investment bars & coins.

Emirates Gold, Al Etihad Gold, Kitco UAE — standardised bars, transparent live pricing. Verify the dealer is DMCC-registered or Dubai Good Delivery certified.

Transparent Insured delivery
§ 04

VAT Refund for Tourists

Non-resident visitors can claim back the 5% VAT paid on gold jewellery at airport departure. Three conditions apply. Remember: investment-grade bars and coins are already 0% VAT, so there's nothing to refund on those — the process only matters for jewellery purchases.

  1. 01

    Minimum spend

Your purchase must be at least AED 250 per tax invoice, from a store registered with the Planet Tax Free scheme.

  2. 02

    Tourist tax-free tag

The shop attaches a tax-free tag to the invoice at checkout. No tag, no refund.

  3. 03

    Validate before check-in

At Dubai or Abu Dhabi airport, go to the Planet Tax Free validation counter before checking luggage. You must be able to produce the gold for inspection.

§ 05

UAE Premium vs Other Markets

The UAE's "under 2%" retail premium on investment gold is one of the tightest in the world. For context, here's how Dubai compares to the three other major retail gold markets covered in this almanac.

Typical retail premium over world spot — investment-grade gold

United Arab Emirates

+2%

Tax-free investment bars, DMCC certification, tight dealer margins

India

+16%

Import duty + GST + making charges stack

Vietnam (SJC)

+22%

State monopoly + capital controls + restricted imports

United States

+5%

Dealer spread + shipping + IRA custody (if applicable)

Buying Gold in Dubai — Checklist

  1. 01

Check the daily rate on DGCX or a live feed

The Dubai Gold & Commodities Exchange publishes a daily reference rate. Most souk shops display it on digital boards — cross-check before negotiating.

  2. 02

Verify the karat with the stamp

Every legitimate piece in the UAE has a karat hallmark stamped on it: 999, 916, 875 or 750. No stamp, no deal.

  3. 03

Negotiate making charges, never gold weight

The gold rate is fixed. Making charges are where shops make margin and where you have bargaining power.

  4. 04

Get an official invoice with TRN

The tax invoice must state weight, karat, rate per gram, making charge, VAT, and the store's TRN (tax registration number). Needed for resale and tourist VAT refund.

  5. 05

For investment, buy bars not jewellery

Emirates Gold, Al Etihad Gold, and PAMP Suisse bars are LBMA-accredited and carry the lowest premium. Skip the souk if your goal is returns, not wearables.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is gold really tax-free in Dubai?
Investment-grade gold bars and coins (99% purity or above, in standard bar/coin form) are 0% VAT in the UAE and carry no import duty. Gold jewellery carries a 5% VAT which can be refunded at airport departure via the Planet Tax Free scheme. There is also no capital gains tax anywhere in the UAE.
What is 21K gold and why is it popular in the UAE?
21K gold is 87.5% pure (stamped as 875). It's the preferred purity across the Gulf — durable enough for daily wear but with a richer yellow colour than 18K. Most everyday jewellery in the UAE is 21K, unlike Indian markets which favour 22K or Western markets which prefer 18K.
Where is the cheapest place to buy gold in Dubai?
For investment bars, online dealers like Emirates Gold and Al Etihad Gold typically offer the tightest premium (under 2% over spot). For jewellery, the Dubai Gold Souk in Deira is the most competitive — because the shops there compete against each other directly and making charges are the primary negotiation lever.
Can tourists buy investment gold in Dubai?
Yes. There are no restrictions on tourists buying gold in the UAE. Keep your original tax invoice and, for investment-grade bars above 99% purity, the assay certificate. Note that declaration rules apply when re-entering your home country — in the US, for example, you must declare gold worth more than $10,000 at customs, though it is not taxed.
How do I know if a Dubai gold dealer is legitimate?
Look for DMCC registration (Dubai Multi Commodities Centre) and Dubai Good Delivery certification for bar manufacturers. For jewellery shops, legitimate stores display the Dubai Chamber of Commerce membership and carry BIS or LBMA supply-chain certification. Always verify the TRN on your invoice — it's checkable on the UAE Federal Tax Authority website.
