What Is a Tola?

The tola is a traditional South Asian weight unit still used every day for gold across India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal. One tola equals 11.664 grams — close to, but not the same as, one troy ounce.

The unit predates British rule. It was standardised during the colonial era when the East India Company minted the tola silver rupee at 11.664 g. When India adopted metric units after independence, grams became the legal standard for commerce — but jewellers and newspapers kept quoting prices per tola because that's what customers understood. They still do.

Price by Purity — 22K vs 24K

India's gold market is dominated by 22-karat jewellery. 22K is 91.67% pure — slightly alloyed with copper or silver for durability. 24K (99.9%+) is reserved for investment bars, coins, and high-end bridal sets.

When an Indian newspaper quotes the "22 carat gold rate today" it's the 22K rate per 10 grams — not per tola. Jewellers then recalculate to tola at point of sale. Learn more in our Gold Karat & Purity Guide.

Gold Prices in India's Major Cities

City-to-city differences in India are tiny. National chains publish a single daily rate, so the real variation is between jewellers within a city, not between cities. The markets below are each the gravitational centre of their regional gold trade.

Maharashtra

Zaveri Bazaar — India's largest wholesale gold market.

Delhi

NCT

Chandni Chowk and Karol Bagh jewellery hubs.

Chennai

Tamil Nadu

Highest per-capita gold demand in India.

Why Indian Gold Trades at a Premium

Convert the international spot price into INR and you'll get a number noticeably lower than the one on your jeweller's board. The gap is a three-layer stack of taxes, duty and craftsmanship — stacked on top of the global rate.

The Indian Retail Gold Stack

World spot (USD → INR)

+100%

Converted via RBI reference rate

Customs basic import duty

+12%

Historically 7.5–12.5%, adjusted periodically

GST (Goods & Services Tax)

+3%

On the gold value itself

Making charges

+15%

5–25% depending on design complexity

Effective retail premium: typically 15–18% above the world spot price after duty, GST and moderate making charges.

India's import duty is a political lever, not a fixed number. The government raises it when the rupee weakens and the gold trade widens the current account deficit — then cuts it when smuggling from Nepal, Myanmar and the Gulf picks up. This is why Indian investors increasingly look at Sovereign Gold Bonds and gold ETFs — both avoid the making-charge and GST stack.

How to Buy Gold in India

  1. 01

Check the live rate before you walk in

Big chains update prices daily at 10am IST. Never accept a 'today special' rate without cross-checking against a national chain's published rate.

  2. 02

Always demand BIS Hallmark with HUID

Since June 2021, all gold jewellery sold in India must carry the BIS Hallmark with a 6-digit HUID (Hallmark Unique ID). No HUID, no deal.

  3. 03

Negotiate making charges, not gold price

The spot rate is fixed. Making charges are flexible — 8–15% is reasonable on plain jewellery, 15–25% on detailed work. This is where you have leverage.

  4. 04

Get the bill with purity breakdown

A valid invoice must list gold weight, purity (22K/24K), rate per gram, making charges, GST, and the HUID number. Keep it — resale depends on it.

  5. 05

For investment, buy bars or coins

Sovereign Gold Bonds or LBMA-certified bars have the lowest premium. Skip jewellery entirely if the goal is returns, not adornment.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 1 tola of gold in grams?
One tola equals 11.664 grams. This is the standard Indian and wider South Asian weight unit for gold, still used daily by jewellers and national chains even though grams are the legal metric standard.
What is 1 tola of gold in troy ounces?
One tola equals 0.375 troy ounces. Equivalently, one troy ounce equals 2.667 tolas. This is the bridge between global spot quotes and Indian retail pricing.
Why is gold expensive in India compared to the world price?
Indian retail gold typically trades at a 15–18% premium over the international spot price. The premium comes from three stacked costs: customs import duty (historically 7.5–12.5%), 3% Goods & Services Tax on the gold value, and making charges (5–25% depending on design).
Is 22K or 24K gold better for investment in India?
24K (99.9% pure) is better for pure investment because it carries lower making charges and holds resale value closer to the gold content. 22K (91.67%) is preferred for jewellery because the copper/silver alloy makes it durable enough to wear. If your goal is returns, buy 24K bars or Sovereign Gold Bonds.
What is BIS Hallmark and HUID?
BIS Hallmark is India's official gold purity certification by the Bureau of Indian Standards. Since June 2021, every piece of gold jewellery sold in India must carry a 6-digit HUID (Hallmark Unique ID) permanently laser-stamped on the piece. It's mandatory, verifiable online, and essential for resale.
