Gold Price in Hong Kong per Tael — Live HKD Rates & Buying Guide
Hong Kong · Gold Market Brief
Hong Kong is Asia's oldest and most liquid gold trading hub. Unlike most of the world, gold here is still traded by the tael — a traditional Chinese weight unit of 37.429 grams, slightly larger than the Vietnamese lượng (37.5g) and significantly different from the mainland Chinese tael (31.25g). The city is also one of the world's largest importers and re-exporters of physical gold, feeding demand across mainland China and Southeast Asia.

What Is a Tael?
The tael (兩, liǎng) is a traditional Chinese weight unit that predates the metric system. In Hong Kong, 1 tael equals 37.429 grams. Critically, this is NOT the same as the mainland Chinese tael (37.301g) or the Vietnamese lượng (37.5g) — the differences are small but matter at volume.
Hong Kong's gold shops quote prices per tael for 9999 (99.99%) gold. This is the benchmark that appears on the daily rate boards at Chow Tai Fook, Luk Fook, Chow Sang Sang, and the independents along Nathan Road.
Tael vs Gram vs Troy Ounce
| From | To | Factor |
|---|---|---|
| 1 HK Tael | Grams | 37.429 g |
| 1 HK Tael | Troy ounces | 1.2034 oz |
| 1 Troy ounce | HK Taels | 0.8310 tael |
| 1 VN Lượng | HK Taels | 1.0019 tael |
| 1 CN Tael | HK Taels | 0.9966 tael |

Chuk Kam (足金) vs 9999
Hong Kong's gold market uses two purity standards that look similar but aren't the same:
9999 Gold
99.99% pure — investment standard
Used for gold bars, investment pieces, and the benchmark tael price. Equivalent to 24K. The rate board at any major chain shows this price.
Chuk Kam (足金)
99.0%+ pure — traditional jewellery
Traditional HK gold jewellery standard. "足金" means "pure gold" but is 99.0%+, not necessarily 99.99%. Priced slightly below 9999. Increasingly being replaced by 9999 in modern pieces.

Premium & Taxes
Hong Kong is a zero-tax gold market:
- 0% import duty on gold
- 0% VAT / GST — Hong Kong has no sales tax
- 0% capital gains tax on gold profits for individuals
- Retail premium: 0.5–2% on investment bars, 8–20% on jewellery (making charges)
This zero-tax structure, combined with the CGSE's deep liquidity and the tael-based pricing system, is why Hong Kong serves as the physical gold gateway between the London/New York markets and mainland China.
